Instant noodles, the Thai way

Next thing you know, Man City are gonna have a Thai coach to replace Sven. They’re gonna have a playing system of little triangles like Barca, but in Sepak Takraw style of acrobatic kicks all the time (hey, Elano could do that…)

Face it, Dr Thaksin doesn’t know much football. He’s just a businessman investing on a club. Although on the one side, I understand about his plight and his court troubles ever since he was ousted from his homeland, and I feel sorry for him, but on the other, this is a man who previously wanted to buy Liverpool but couldn’t even name any of their players.

Say anything you want, but to own a big football club you need to know the sport and the fans alike. Mr Hicks at Liverpool is doing exactly that. Of course, Americans don’t know much about the rules of soccer, but he’s learning fast. In identifying the Rick Parry era as a disaster despite a healthy number of cup competition success, he knows that the fans really want the Premier League more than the Champions League even.

Mike Ashley blends in with the crowd, a habit his associates wouldn’t have even thought of him doing. Roman Abramovich is doing his best too, being himself. Dr Thaksin could have been the dear beloved Frank of the Man City fans if he had allowed them to. Yet he sees football as nothing more than a business (of course it is, but it’s more than that).

Business tells you you need to get instant success. Cut the losses, make gains. The dip in form of Man City in the past few months was seen as a managerial failure and nothing more. Despite the accolade Sven has, it’s time for a change.

He doesn’t put the blame on the injury of Micah Richards, who matured as an England international and first-teamer this season. He doesn’t put the blame on off-form strikers. He doesn’t put the blame on the thin squad having to play Sun Jihai who gives unfortunate penalties every game he plays.

Instant success. It’s like instant noodles to him. If there’s a problem, blame it on the manager.

I don’t think he knows the blue flavour of the noodles. Having done the double over arch-rivals Man United (and possibly will deny them the title), having to be in a respectable top-half finish after turmoil last year when they can’t even get a win at home, firing Sven is going to leave him a sour taste in his mouth, as the fans strongly object to this. Sure, he owns the club, he finances the players, he can do all he wants. But take away the spirit of the club and you will have riots soon. The two wins against United alone has made Sven a legend, and to me he is one of the best club coaches in the world (I stress on “club coach”).

And with that, if he does indeed appoint a Thai successor and play their three Thai players in the first team, he will have a stomachache in the near future.

…I can’t believe I just wrote about Man City. I’m a Red Devil.
